Piper PA-23 Aztec History : The Piper PA-23 Apache was one of the first twin engine powered to be produced. It is also the first aircraft Piper named after an Indian Tribe. Several aircraft manufactured by the Piper Aircraft Company continued to name their aircraft after Indian Tribes. In 1948 Piper acquired the Consolidated Vultee’s Stinson design. Piper made a few changes to the original design and started producing a four place light twin. The aircraft was fabric covered with a fixed landing gear much like the Stinson. Most unusual was the twin fin tail design. This design was not what Piper was looking. A new design with a more powerful engine, all metal construction, a retractable landing gear and a conventional tail made a better looking with more performance than the previous design. The first aircraft flew on March 2, 1952. The UK Market gained interest in the Apache so a special version with a gross weight of 2265kg (4995lb) instead of 2360kg (5200lb) was the PA-E23-250. Several other versions with larger engines, extending the nose cone, landing gear doors, square tipped rudder appeared on the market as the Sequin Geronimo, the Miller Jet Profile and the Wilson Jet Profile. |
