Vans Aircraft RV-8 History :

The most popular Home Built Aircraft on the market today surely falls in the lap of Van’s Aircraft. Starting with the tandem two seat RV-4 Richard VanGrunsven founder of Van’s Aircraft built a master piece. From the two place RV-4 Van’s Aircraft is now producing the RV-10 a certified four place power house. After taking the company in the direction of the RV-10 Van’s decided to re-visit the tandem seating concept. Although the RV-6 and 6A were the most popular sellers Richard still saw a significant percentage of pilots that enjoyed the tandem seating. After conferring with the aircraft community the consensus showed an aircraft that was similar to the RV-4 but larger would be popular. This brought the birth of the now very popular RV-8 Tandem Seating Aircraft.

The first RV-8 made its début at Oshkosh in 1995. The response was what Richard expected. The ground around the aircraft was so crowded it was hard to get a look at the aircraft. This is all that Van’s Aircraft needed and the aircraft went into production in 1998. Shortly thereafter it was followed by the RV-8A which was a tricycle gear version. was followed by the kit for the tricycle gear RV-8A.

The RV-8/8A performance maintained that of the fighter like feel. The fuselage was much wider than the RV-4 to accommodate the larger pilots in comfort. Aerobatics were a delight in the aircraft with excellent visibility and control balance. The RV-8/8A complies with the positive 6 G and negative 3G standards for aerobatic flight. Like all the RV Series the aircraft lands slow and flies really fast. Really a must have aircraft for the aerobatic pilot.
