White Knights Spaceship One History:

Developed by Scaled Composites from Mojave, California as part of their Tier One space vehicle program, the Model 318 White Knight is a jet-powered carrier aircraft used to launch the Space Ship One experimental spacecraft. This aircraft was also being used as a research test bed for the Boeing X-37 space plane from June 2005 until April 2006. White Knight carries the FAA registration number N318SL. The White Knight uses twin afterburning J-85 engines, which were selected for their availability and low cost.

White Knight first flew on August 1, 2002 but, the flight was aborted shortly after takeoff due to a wing spoiler problem. The spoilers were designed to increase the glide slope so that the White Knight vehicle could be used as simulator for training pilots for Space Ship One operations. The spoilers have been disabled and the ability to match the glide slope of Space Ship One has been abandoned. White Knight next flew on August 5, 2002, and performed as expected. Further development continued until April, 2003 when White Knight and Space Ship One were presented to the media. White Knight flew as part of the Tier One program that won the Ansari X Prize on 2004 October 4 and has continued to fly launching DARPA's experimental X-37 spaceplane for its approach and landing tests in 2005 and 2006.

White Knight and Space Ship One shared the same forward fuselage outer mold line (OML) to reduce costs and with was intended to allow for White Knight to act as a flying simulator for training Space Ship One pilots.

Our model of the White Knight and Space Ship One show the duo as they appeared on their record breaking flight. The overall white color scheme features red stripes and the mission markings on the sides of the fuselage with Space Ship One wearing the white overall scheme with the red striping and blue stars on the nose.
