Vans Aircraft RV-7 History : Richard VanGrunsven an aviation pioneer had been building home built aircraft for several years and watched the industry produce aircraft that were still using a cloth covering on the wings and some still using cloth to cover the fuselage. Richard dreamed of a home built aircraft that would be of all metal construction and fall within the new guild lines of the FAA 51/49 rule. If 51% of the aircraft was built by the owner the FAA would consider the aircraft home built and therefore experimental. Richard formed a company Van’s Aircraft and started with the tandem seat RV 4. From that small, fast, aerobatic aircraft came several types all using an all metal construction. One of the most popular designs the Van’s Aircraft Company developed was the RV-7 and RV-7A. The RV-7’s are a side by side two seat single engine low wing aircraft. The aircraft will accept engines including the Lycoming IO-360 up to 200 HP and carries 42 US Gallons of fuel. The RV-7 is a tail dragger while the 7A is a fixed tri gear configuration. In March of 2008 over 578 airframes were flying. |
