The Beaver was de Havilland’s most successful program sales wise with almost 1,700 aircraft produced. Work on the Beaver started in 1946 with considerable advise from the Ontario Department of Lands and Forests department. The first prototype flew on August 16th, 1947 with certification arriving in 1948. The first Beavers off the production were designed to seat five to six passengers but as production continued an extra two passenger seats were incorporated. The design was so well planned that about the only major change came in December 1963 when a Pratt and Whitney Canada PT6A Turbo Prop was installed. This gave the aircraft STOL performance and higher take-off weights. The aircraft gained the name as the Turbo Beaver. The cabin was a little longer to accommodate 11 passengers. Several Beavers still serve the Bush in North America and in other parts of the world. |
