The DH.100 Vampire was mainly used as a trainer until 1966 although it serviced with the English RAF as a front line aircraft it never saw combat. There were about 3,300 Vampires built, a quarter of them under licence in other countries. The Vampire was mainly an experimental design because of its unorthodox arrangement and the use of a single engine. The British Government only considered a twin engine aircraft practical until more powerful engines were developed such as Frank Halford’s H.1. De Havilland were approached to build an airframe to house the H.1 engine and their first design was the DH.99 later to become known as the DH.100 Vampire in 1941. Because of the work load at the de Havilland production facility most of the first DH.100 Vampires were built by English Electric Aircraft. Once production began the British RAF was eager to receive the aircraft hoping it would be able to assist the Britains war efforts however because the aircraft was still being developed at the end of the war it never saw combat. There were 3, 268 airframes built, in several variations, until the aircraft went out of production. It was used by more than 31 Air Forces around the world. |
