Saab 340A History : The Saab 340 is a twin engine Turbo Prop aircraft that was originally designed and initially produced by a partnership between Saab and Fairchild Aircraft. The first aircraft flew as the SF340 on January 25, 1983. In 1985 Fairchild decided to get out of the aircraft manufacturing business after building 40 units so Saab continued aircraft production under the designation 340A and 159 units were built. The second generation of the Saab 340A was the 340B. The Saab 340B was introduced with more powerful engines and wider horizontal stabilizers in 1989. With the noise standards becoming an issue Saab built all the 340Bs with the active noise control system. Around 200 units were built. The third generation version, the Saab 340B Plus, was delivered in 1994 and incorporated improvements that were being introduced at the same time in the Saab 2000. About 100 of the Saab 340 B Plus were manufactured. Most of the Saab 340 family of aircraft were built with a cabin configured to carry between 30 and 36 passengers. Saab elected to end production of all 340 models in 1999 and ended all aircraft production in 2005. |
