Eurocopter AS350 Ecureuil History:

The Eurocopter AS350 Ecureuil ("Squirrel") was manufactured by Aérospatiale (now part of Eurocopter Group) to replace the popular Alouette II Helicopter. Several varients of this Helicopter have been produced. In the U.S. the AS350 is sold as the AStar. The AS 350 is a single engine high altitude Helicopter. A twin engine version was also produced as the AS355 Ecureuil 2.

The Eurocopter AS350 Ecureuil has shown its self to be extremely versatile. It has served in several military roles, fire fighting roles, and of course in passenger V.I.P and even air ambulance capacities. To perform all these roles several engines have been installed increasing the power of the aircraft. One application even has a FADEC controlled engine installed so all the pilot needs to do is program the necessary power requirement and the engine accelerates to that demand. In May of 2005 a Eurocopter AS350 Ecureuil actually reached an altitude to touch down on top of Mount Everest, an altitude of 29,035 feet. It continues to be a top seller and production remains strong for the AS 350.

Several variants of the AS350B model were produced. The first variant replace the original engine with a Turbomeca Arriel 1B. The AS350B2 used the Turbomeca Arriel 1D engine. The AS350 B3 was considered the high performance version with the Turbomeca Arriel 2B engine install with a Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC) in place. It also had a dual hydraulics system giving the Helicopter a second degree of safety at the higher altitudes.
