Schweizer 300 Helicopter History: Originally manufactured by the Hughes Helicopter Company the Schweizer 300 is a small light utility platform. The aircraft continues in production by Schweizer, a Subsidiary of Sikorsky. In 2009 Sikorsky renamed the Helicopter to the Sikorsky S-300C. The design remained the same with its three bladed main rotor and Schweizer piston powered engine installed. During the 1950’s the Hughes Tool Company's Aircraft Division conducted a market survey which showed that there was a demand for a low-cost, lightweight two-seat helicopter. In September 1955 work started on the Model 269. The first prototype flew during October 1956. Although the aircraft flew flawlessly the decision to place the aircraft into production was put on hold until 1960 even after being certified in April of 1959. Deliveries began in 1961. By the spring of 1964 over 300 units were delivered proving it a popular choice for Police Departments and Agriculture use. In 1964 the Model 269B set an endurance record of 101 hours of continuous flight. The aircraft would enter into a ground effect hover for refueling and to change the pilots. To prove the landing skid did not touch the ground during the endurance testing eggs were taped to the bottom of the landing skid. In 1969 improvements to the 269C Model changed the Model designation to the Hughes 300. Some still referred to the Helicopter as the 269C model. With the changes made the Certification process was necessary. Certification was granted by the FAA in may of 1970. The new 300 had a more powerful engine installed with the Lycoming HIO-360D1A producing 190 horsepower. This gave the Helicopter a 45% increase in payload and overall performance enhancements. To date over 3,000 units of the 269/300 have been manufactured during the last 50 years which speaks for itself as to its popularity. |
