Airbus A340-200 History:

In June 1987 Airbus Industries made the decision to enter the Commercial Airline Heavy Aircraft market and introduced the A340-200 and 300. These aircraft are the initial variants of the successful quad engined A340 family of long haul wide bodies. The first flight for the A340-300 occurred on October 25th, 1991. The first delivery was to Lufthansa and Air France in March 1993 after receiving certification from the JAA in December 1992.

Airbus looked for commonality with their 300 series of aircraft. Both the 340 and 330 share the same flight deck with side stick control, fly by wire and basic airframe and systems. Power comes from four G.E. CFM56 Turbo Fans giving the aircraft free ETOPS restrictions. The largest of the 340 series is the A340-300E capable of carrying 295 passengers with typical ranges of 7,100 nautical miles. The power for these aircraft comes the most powerful CFM56 engines ever built. The first aircraft of this type was delivered to Singapore Airlines in 1996.
