Mitsubishi MU-2B History:

The high wing twin engine Turbo Prop Mitsubishi MU-2 is one of postwar Japan's most successful aircraft. The design phase started in 1956 as a light twin suitable for a variety of roles. The first aircraft flew on 14th September 1963 with twin Turbomeca Astazou engines installed.

Once the aircraft went into production the Production Facility was moved to North America in San Antonio, Texas. Although most of the parts were produced in Japan and were shipped to the Production Facility in Texas. Over 750 aircraft were produced and sold from this facility.

Subsequent to the MU-2 came the MU-2B. These aircraft were produced with the Garrett TPE331 engines developing more power for the aircraft. Several variants followed. Some with stretched fuselages and some with even more powerful engines giving the aircraft better performance. The final version of the MU-2 was the MU-2GN named the Marquise. This aircraft has the largest Garrett Engines TPE331 engines installed with a total of 715 Shaft Horse Power.

The Japanese military is the only Government Agency to utilize the aircraft for service. Four of the “C” Models were used by Japan’s Self-Defense Forces for liaison and photo reconnaissance aircraft. The Japanese Government also procured 29 of the “E” Models which they used for search and rescue. These aircraft are identifiable by the bulged observation windows and the sliding door that was used for dropping rafts.
