Beechcraft F-90 King Air History: The Beechcraft King Air family is still the fleet leader for twin engine Turbo Prop aircraft. With over 10,000 aircraft produced there is no question to its popularity. Originally produced by Beech Aircraft Corporation now referred to as Beechcraft, a division of Hawker Beechcraft, the aircraft still remains in production today as the C90GT. The King Air 90 was conceived in 1961 after modifying a Queen Air with Turbo Prop engines. The performance was so good orders began to start coming in. The first production King Air 90 was delivered on October 8th, 1965. By the end of the month over 152 units were ordered. By 1966 over 112 King Air 90’s were completed the Pratt and Whitney Canada PT6A-6 engine was replaced with an engine with more power with the Pratt and Whitney Canada PT6A-20 engine installed. In less than two years Beech managed to build 206 aircraft in less than two years. Even the U.S. Army was ordering the aircraft is was such a performer. Many were used for electronic surveillance. A total of 162 aircraft were delivered to the U.S. Army for this purpose. |
