Cessna 680 Citation Sovereign History : With all the aircraft models Cessna has and still does produce they thought it was time to start competing in the mid size corporate jet market. An aircraft that could replace the aging Falcon 10, Westwind and Sabreliner. After intense market research Cessna found that more than half the fleet of this size aircraft were due for replacement. Development started in 1997 and the aircraft was introduced to the 1998 NBAA audience. Plans for certification were for 2003 with deliveries starting in 2004 however, several design changes were forced prior to first flight delaying the schedule. The Cessna Sovereign is designed on the Excel’s fuselage but stretched it almost 5 feet and a new wing and several other differences. The cabin is claimed to be the largest in class with almost 40% more room than the Bombardier Learjet 60 an almost 18% larger than the Raytheon Hawker 800XP. The power for the aircraft comes from two Pratt and Whitney Canada PW 306 Turbo Fan Engines with FADEC Control. Of course the cockpit has the Glass Honeywell Epic CDS avionics suite. With such powerful engines installed the can operate form short runways at high altitude. |
