Piper PA-46 Malibu History: Piper lays claims to the PA-46 Malibu as being the first pressurized cabin class piston single. According to Piper the all new PA-46 Malibu was the first pressurized cabin class piston single. Despite its introduction during a U.S. recession and oppressive liability laws that were popping up on a daily basis from the U.S. Government the Malibu still sold relatively strongly. The aircraft was announced in November 1982 intending to compete with the Cessna P210 Centurion and some of the older light twin engine aircraft. The first proto type flew unpressurized in November 30th, 1979. With all the laws being changed for light twin aircraft Piper stood back and made the aircraft right. The first pressurized aircraft flew in 1982 and went into production after certification was awarded in September 1983. Deliveries started soon after in November. The first production models were designated as the Piper PA-46-310P which had a turbocharged Continental TISO-520 Power Plant producing 310 Horse Power. The aircraft was built with a high aspect ratio wing and a pretty roomy cabin for an aircraft of this class with club seating for four. The improved PA-46-350P Malibu Mirage, first flight December 21, 1987, replaced the 310P Malibu in production from October 1988. The major change introduced on the Malibu Mirage was the 260kW (350hp) Textron Lycoming TIO-540-AE2A, while other changes included a new electrical system and revised interior. From 1994 Piper has introduced several modifications to the Mirage which include a new Brake System, autopilot and air-conditioning. The Mirage is now offered with a Glass Cockpit, an improved wing which increased the max takeoff weight by 40 pounds. Although production was halted in 2001 allowing Piper to focus on the new Piper Meridian the Mirage went back into production and is still being produced alongside the Turbo Prop Powered Meridian. |
