Mooney M20 History

This popular single-piston light touring aircraft has been in production in various forms since the original Mooney M.20 from 1953. With over 10,000 aircraft produced of all variants, the improved Mooney range put into production following the acquisition of Mooney by the Republic Steel Company in late 1973. Initially, the Mooney M.20 Ranger, Chaparral, and Executive were produced before a new line of M.20 aircraft emerged in 1976 with a more streamlined exterior, new windscreen, and rounded-off window. Several models remain in production with total aircraft deliveries of the improved Mooney M.20 in excess of 4,145 plus aircraft.

The improved Mooney M.20 aircraft feature a low straight dihedral wing with wing glove and powered by a single Continental, Lycoming, or Porsche engine with two-or three-blade propeller. Styling features include two cabin windows on each side, a forward swept tailfin with dorsal fillet, and low-set tail plane. The Mooney features retractable tricycle landing gear.

Variants of the improved Mooney M.20 include the M.20J 201 with cleaned up exterior and two side windows each on side, produced in LM (Lean Machine), 5E (Special Edition), The M.205 with rounded side windows, ATS reduced specification, and MSE modified IFR versions; MSE named Allegro from 1990 M.20K 231: Turbocharged 210 hp engine, increased fuel; also in 5E and 252T5E turbocharged SE variants, named Encore from 1997. The Mooney M.20L PFM features a longer fuselage and 217 hp Porsche power plant. The M.20M TLS with Turbocharged 270 hp engine, three blade propeller and named Bravo from 1996 onwards. The current production M.20R Ovation with luxury interior and 280 hp Continental engine, the M.2DS Eagle, the lower-cost entry-level version with de-rated engine. The Ovation 2 and Eagle 2 are latest models. Also available in DX, GX, and GX 60th Anniversary Edition with enhanced avionics and systems.
