Boeing 737-400 History: In 1986 The Boeing Co. decided to develop a newer higher capacity version of the fast selling 737-300 in June 1986. This new aircraft would be designated the B737-400 with 180 seats. Although The Boeing Co. already had the B757 in production with 180 to 200 seats that replace the 727 Tri-Jet their intent was to produce an aircraft that had commonality with the other models of the B737 like the B737-300. Commonality gave operators considerable costs savings in terms of parts and maintenance. The first flight occurred during February 19th, 1988 and the aircraft entered service during October the same year with Piedmont. The biggest change from the B737-300 and the larger B737-400 was a fuselage stretch of 6 Feet. This stretch increased the capacity to 180 seats. With more capacity more power was needed so the engines were changed to the CFM56. The aircraft pictured here is painted in Flair Air Livery. Flair Air is a charter service company that is based in British Colombia, Canada. Flair Air has maintained their fleet exclusively with the Boeing B737-400 aircraft. Flair Air provides service throughout Canada, the U.S.A., Mexico and the Caribbean. |
