A Twin Engines light helicopter built by Bell the The Bell 222 is the first light twin helicopter developed in the United States. It is by far one of the most innovated helicopters to come off the assembly line. Several Helicopter manufactures have copied a design or two from the Bell 222. The Helicopter used in the famous TV Program “Airwolf” was a Bell 222 with a modified exterior. The Bell 222 is the first Helicopter that performed a complete loop in flight.

It first flew on August 13th 1976 with a dual hydraulic and electrical system. It had a retractable undercarriage. It was certified in December 1979 and deliveries began in the early 1980’s. Although the Helicopter performed to the specification Bell was looking for the Bell 222B was introduced in 1982 with a larger main rotor as a Utility Twin. A Skid type Landing Gear was affixed in 1983.

A lead on to the Bell 222 is the Bell 230 with twin Allison 250 engines for more power. The Bell 230 could be ordered with either a Skid Type Landing Gear or a Retractable Landing Gear. Only 38 units were produced being replaced by the more powerful Bell 430.
