McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle History:

Although the The McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle was designed largely in the late 1960’s and early 107’s it remains one of the world's most formidable interceptor fighters. The aircraft serves with several Countries and Militaries around the world plan to keep the aircraft in livery until the mid 21 Century. The McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle is the only aircraft that can make the claim of NO air to air loses.

After the Soviet Union introduced the MIG series to the world the U.S. Government realized the aircraft stable that was presently in use would not compete with aircraft in the MIG Class. A design specification was issued to all the U.S. Military contractors to produce an aircraft to not only compete with the MIG Class but to far exceed it. In July of 1967, In 1967 both General Dynamics and McDonnell were given the go ahead contracts from the U.S. Government the other manufactures would have to continue on their own expense.

The specification was strict, the new fighter needed a wing that would not buffet at Mach .9, a very high power to weight ratio, a range that would allow the aircraft to fly from the U.S. to Europe without in flight re-fuelling and a maximum speed of Mac 2.5. The Specification also called for a twin engine format to increase the aircraft’s return reliability. The weight was not to exceed 40,000 pounds and the aircraft would be single pilot controlled. The aircraft picked up the designation as the FX. PDP’s were finally given to Fairchild-Republic, McDonnell Douglas, and North American Rockwell in 1968. The aircraft was now known as the F-15.
