Ercoupe 415-D History :

The Ercoupe, sometimes called the Aircoupe was designed by Fred Weick's after a career with NACA in the late 1930's. The first flight took place in 1937. A total of about 5,612 aircraft were produced both prior to WW II, during and after war. The aircraft was unique in the way it linked the rudder with the ailerons for smooth controlled turns. The aircraft also has a unique ground steering system. While conventional aircraft use the rudder peddles to steer the aircraft Ercoupe coupled the nose wheel and rudder to the control yoke. It steered like a car with it's tri-gear landing carriage. The aircraft being rather small had a useful load of only 550 pounds and a top Speed of 114 MPH.

In the early 1940's Homer A. Boushey after an Airforce Career still had his love of rockety. He believed aircraft could achive shorter take-offs if small rocked were attached to the aircraft to assist the takeoff. Boushey decided to use the Ercoupe to test his theory. The test was very successful with three rockets strapped under each wing the take off distance was reduced to half the normal distance.

Other Ercoupe versions were manufactured under the Fred Weick patents. The General Skyfarer was a two control twin tail with out rudders and the Aeronca "Chum". The Chum was basically the same as the Ercoupe.
