Bell UH-1B Iroquois

The UH-1 Iroquois was designed to fit a need developed by the United States Army for a utility helicopter capable of MedEvac duty. The UH-1 series would go on to have a prolonged life in both military and civil functions and would most notably be remembered for its multi-purpose duty in the skies over the Vietnam War. Probably the most recognizable and produced Western helicopter of all time, the UH-1 Iroquois (or "Huey") still survives today in some form or another.

The initial UH-1 prototypes were designated as the XH-40 followed by the YH-40 of which six were produced. In 1962, the designation of the system changes. Thusly the HU-1A (the "HU" is where the name "Huey" is derived from) to the UH-1, with "UH" covering the facet of "Utility Helicopter".

The UH-1B Iroquois "Huey" is the model version that would go on to see high production numbers and extensive service in the Vietnam War. The B model featured an enlarged main cabin capable of fitting three litters or six combat ready personnel in addition to the pilot and copilot. B models were fitted with weaponry as well, and this experimentation led directly to the more gunship-natural model of the UH-1C Huey.
