North American F-100 Super Sabre History:

The F-100 Super Sabre was of a stout yet sleek airframe design. Swept back wing systems were complimented by a large rear rudder mounted just over the single engine exhaust. The identifiable air intake at front was reminiscent of the F-86 Sabre that flew nearly a decade before it and provided stellar years of USAF service through the Korean War. The F-100 came in a single-seat fighter / fighter-bomber and, later, a two-seat reconnaissance platform. Armament included the standard 4 x 20mm cannon array and six hardpoints for bombs and rockets of various kinds.

The F-100 Super Sabre would go on to see extensive combat action in the skies over Vietnam with the versatile airframe seeing molds in the form of strike fighter, reconnaissance and low-level bomber. By this time, the definitive "D" model was in play and offered up improved bombing systems and inflight refueling capacity carried over from "C" models. In the end of that conflict, the F-100 would see thousands of sorties completed matching the capability and versatility of its venerable North American cousin - the P-51 Mustang in World War Two. The F-100 "B" model was a proposed Mach 2 nuclear-capable fighter-bomber with modifications made to the airframe. This particular model developed into the YF-107 prototype (detailed elsewhere on this site) and would not see production.

The F-100 would see export numbers abroad to United States allies throughout the Cold War. The system would eventually be replaced by the ever newer supersonic aircraft waiting just around the corner. The F-100 would see its final days of frontline service in the early 1970's.
