Northrop Grumman Global Hawk History: The Northrop Grumman RQ-4 Global Hawk UAV has been in service with the USAF since 2001. Other operators of the UAV type are the US Navy with the German Luftwaffe ordering airframes to outfitted with European sensors & avionics. The Global Hawk set and still hold numerous records, including altitude, duration and distance records, being the first un-manned aircraft to fly across the Pacific Ocean, a distance of over 8,000 miles. A key weapon in the War on Terror, it allows the USAF an undetected eye in the sky with a lethal 3000 lb payload. The program will eventually produce 54 aircraft with two aircraft having been lost in operations to date. |
