Piper PA-16 Clipper History: The Piper J-3 Cub also known as the Piper PA-16 is a small, simple, light aircraft that was built between 1937 and 1947 by Piper Aircraft. The aircraft sported tandem (fore and aft) seating and a tail wheel landing gear. The aircraft was intended for training but because of it's ease to fly, affordability and popularity it can be called one of the most popular aircraft of all time. Some have even compared it to the Ford Model "T". The first aircraft, the E-2 was built by Taylor Aircraft financially supported by William T. Piper. The Taylor Company bankrupt and the rights to the aircraft were purchased by the Piper Company. When hostilities broke out in Europe in 1939 the US Government formed the Civilian pilot Training Program. The piper J-3 Cub was the perfect for the role. There were 435,165 Pilots that trained in the Cub. The Piper PA-16 Clipper was basically the PA-16 with an extended fuselage model of the PA-15 Vagabond. Both aircraft were manufactured in the late 1947's for the same reason. Piper was now heading towards brankruptcy due to low aircraft sales. They needed to produce a new aircraft that would be competitive with other aircraft on the market. The result was the Vagabond which was simply a J-3 Cub but with side by side seating. |
