SIAI Marchetti S-211 History : The SIAI Marchetti S-211 is a jet-powered military trainer aircraft designed as one of the Next Generation Trainers (NGT). The intent of the aircraft was for Militaries around the world to use the S-211 as a primary trainer giving the students basic flight skills as well as advanced flight skills. A new pilot after mastering the flight characteristics of the S-211 would have the skills to advance from the S-211 into a modern Jet Fighter like the F-16 or the F-18. The S-211 was to be the follow on aircraft to the already in production SIAI Marchetti S-260 already in the hands of several Militaries around the world. The first order for the aircraft came from the Singapore Air Force for an original order of 10 aircraft in 1983. The S-211 a small tandem two-seat shoulder-wing monoplane with a retractable tricycle landing gear and powered by a single Pratt & Whitney Canada JT15D-4C turbofan was so liked by the Singapore Air Force an additional 21 aircraft were delivered A slightly modified version of the S-211 renamed the S-211A which installed a slightly more powerful engine, the Pratt and Whitney Canada JT15-5C with an inverted oil system was produced as a contender in the USA's Joint Primary Aircraft Training System (JPTATS) aircraft selection. However SIAI Marchetti lost the completion to Raytheon/Beechcraft which was producing a modified version of the Pilatus PC-9. SIAI Marchetti had put everything they had into the completion resulting in bankruptcy. The rights to the aircraft were sold to Aerimachetti. |
