de Havilland DHC-6 Twin Otter History:

The de Havilland Twin Otter is a Canadian short take-off and landing (STOL) utility aircraft developed by de Havilland Canada and currently manufactured by Viking Air. The aircraft?s fixed tricycle undercarriage, STOL capabilities, and high rate of climb have made it a successful cargo, regional passenger airliner, and MEDEVAC aircraft. Development of the DHC-6 Twin Otter started in 1964 and the maiden flight was on 20 May 1965. For bush operators, the Twin Otter?s improved reliability of the turboprop power and improved performance of a twin-engined configuration made it a very popular alternative to the single-engined, piston-powered Otter which had been flying since 1951. In 1988 production of the Twin Otter ended with the Series 300 aircraft. When production ended, Viking Air of Victoria, British Columbia, who manufactured replacement parts for all out-of-production de Havilland Canada aircraft, bought all remaining tooling from de Havilland Canada. On 24 February 2006 Viking Air purchased the ?type certificates? for all out-of-production de Havilland Canada DHC-1 through DHC-7 aircraft. This gave Viking Air the exclusive right to manufacture new aircraft and in November 2007 a new final assembly plant was established in Calgary, Alberta. The first new Series 400 production aircraft, serial number 845, was delivered to Zimex Aviation of Switzerland in July 2010. The Twin Otter can cruise at 172 miles per hour for a distance of 920 miles.

Testimonials

Mike,

I just saw pictures of the pictures of the 303 and I'm very pleased with the results.
Thanks a lot! FDM was certainly a much better experience than the nightmare I went through with "Warplanes." Have a good
Thanksgiving. I will be ordering one of my husband's earlier planes in the next few months.

Sincerely,
J. Paschen

Mike,

I can not tell you how happy I am with this model and your service. The model arrived in only a few days and in perfect condition. It was well packed in custom cut foam.

Now to the model itself, this is no ordinary mass produced product. It is a very high quality and detailed model with accuracy only a carefully researched custom model builder could have produced.

During 1967-1969 I was assigned to the 552nd Wing at Korat Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand. We flew these aircraft for MIG hunting, surveillance etc. I know this aircraft. This particular model bears the tail number 53-0555. I actually maintained that aircraft. Not just one like it, BUT IT. The detail is astounding. The paint color is perfect, as if you had a bucket of govt. paint. The de-icer boots are correctly placed and painted black where they should be. The tail number is correct. This one is actually a historically significant one. The aircraft displays the Air Force "Outstanding Unit Citation" ribbon. The model also has the correct windows/doors and front wheel well markings.

Please use my comments anywhere you like. I am very fortunate to have found this model, through Providence, over the others available.

A Proud owner,
Bill Donovan
