Hatteras Luxury Motor Yatch History

The Hatteras Line of Luxury Motor Yatchs began in High Point, North Carolina. Willis Slane envisioned building a boat to meet the rigors of the waters off the North Carolina shore around barrier islands. It was there in 1959 at Cape Hatteras, where nor'easters can blow almost as fiercely as hurricanes that Willis envisioned a new line of boats. The boat that Wills had in mind would not be an ordinary boat of wood, it needed to meet the challenges of the rough waters and high seas and still maintain the qualities of a great sport fishing boat. Willis Slane envisioned building a boat that could conquer the waters off Diamond Shoals and surmount the Hatteras weather. This new boat would have to be rugged and robust to take the pounding of Hatteras waters. But most importantly, it would have to be a great sport fishing boat – big enough to handle a group of passionate fishermen and comfortable to house the family while in port. This new line of boats was to be fabricated with a new material, fiber glass.

The first boat off the production line happened on Mach 22, 1960. It was a sport fishing boat with a 14 foot beam and twin 275 HP Lincoln V-8 Engines. Willis named the boat the Knit Wits. Within two years the Hatteras Company manufactured the 41 foot Double Cabin. Throughout the years Hatteras boats continued to get better and bigger. This custom model of the Hatteras Boat Company was manufactured to meet the same quality standard of the Hatteras Company.
