Product Overview

The aircraft model shown above is Factory Direct Models elite collector series scale model replica of the Boeing B-17F Flying Fortress named the “Memphis Belle” aircraft that was flown by the United States Army Air Forces out of Bassingbourn, England. This airframe was assigned to the 324th Bomb Squadron and was piloted by Captain Robert Morgan. His crew flew 29 combat missions and all but four were in the Memphis Belle. Memphis Belle was the namesake of Capt. Morgan’s sweetheart, Margaret Polk, a resident of Memphis, Tennessee. The nose art was provided by George Petty of Esquire magazine and was from their April 1941 edition. Corporal Tony Starcer painted the famous nose art of the pretty woman depicting her suit in blue on the port side and in red on the starboard side. The Memphis Belle was the second B-17 to complete 25 missions with the original crew intact. The B-17 named “Hell’s Angels” of the 303rd Bomb Group was the first to accomplish this feat and did so just six days before the Memphis Belle. After completing her 25th combat mission, the Memphis Belle was flown back to the United States by her crew for a 31 city war bond tour. Twenty five bomb shapes were added to her nose art depicting her 25 combat missions and eight swastika designs were added depicting the number of German aircraft claimed shot down. Memphis Belle is now at the National Museum of the United States Air Force at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, near Dayton, Ohio.
