Piper PA-28-140 Cherokee History: In 1959 Piper started thinking about a larger aircraft than the Pripacer and Colt and the Cherokees were put on the drawing board. The aircraft was designated the Piper Cherokee PA-28-150 and -160. Unlike the earlier Piper Aircraft the Cherokee is a low wing with all metal construction. The first aircraft flew on January 14th, 1960 with a 160 Horse Power engine installed. Later in 1962 a 180 Horse Power version was offered. The PA-28-140 was offered as a two place training aircraft in 1964. Several variants of the Cherokee came down the Piper production Line, the Cherokee B and Cherokee C, the 180D, 235C, 140 Flite Liner two seat trainer PA-28-140, -180F, -235E, PA-28-180 Cherokee Challenger and PA-28-235 Cherokee Charger, the PA-28-180 Cherokee Archer and PA-28-235 Cherokee Pathfinder and the PA-28-151 Cherokee Warrior. In total over 30,000 Cherokee series were built. The Cherokee PA-28-140 had over 10,000 aircraft delivered. By any standard the Cherokee line of aircraft was a winner for Piper. The aircraft remains in production today by The New Piper Company. |
