Cessna 337D Skymaster History: The only twin engine with a pusher and puller propeller ever built by Cessna is the Cessna Skymaster. One engine is mounted on the nose while the other is mounted between a twin tail boom at the rear of the fuselage. This gives the aircraft a center line thrust even if one engine fails and produces a very unique sound. The first Cessna Skymnaster 336 flew on February 28th, 1961 with a fixed landing gear. Production started in May of 1963 with 195 aircraft produced through 1964. Cessna introduced the Super Skymaster in February 1965 with more powerful engines and a retractable landing gear. In 1966 a turbocharged T337 was produced and then Cessna installed a pressurization system to allow the aircraft to fly at higher altitudes in 1973. This model was designated the Cessna Skymaster P337G. In total 2,993 Skymasters of different variants along with 513 aircraft for the U.S. Military were produced. Cessna ended production in 1982 however Reims in France bought the rights to the aircraft and re-designated the civil version the FTB337 STOL and the Military version as the FTMA Milirole. Reims produced 94 aircraft until they too went out of production. |
