Cessna 177 Cardinal History: After all the years Cessna produced the infamous Cessna 172 line of aircraft it was time to produce something more modern. The Cessna 177 was born in the mid 1960's. The Cessna 177 has a wider and much more spacious cabin. The engine selected was the Conny 0-320-E that had been recently installed on the 172 with a fixed pitch prop. Two versions of the Cessna 177 were offered, the standard and the more popular 177 Cardinal. Even with all the changes made conpared to the Cessna 172 the aircraft was not a big seller untill an improve engine was installed making the aircraft a more powerful 4 seat configured aircraft than the older Cessna 172. Cessna did not stop there. The Cessna 177B model was produced in the 1970's with a revised airfoil, a conical camber wingtip, cowl flaps and a constant speed propeller. A little later an up scale version, The Cessna Cardinal Classic appeared around 1978. This aircraft has a full IFR Instrument Panel and a more luxurious interior. Carrying on the tridition of the Cessna 172 a Cessna 177 Cardinal Classic with a retractable landing gear appeared in the 1070's. The engine was also up graded to a fuel injected IO-369-A with a constant speed propeller giving the aircraft a marketing edge. |
