Mil MI-24 (Milhindi)
| Early service use soon confirmed the 'Hind A' as a reliable and capable helicopter and, furthermore, that its installed armament gave it a formidable attack capability. Soviet views on the deployment of helicopters was then in a transitional stage, with considerable interest in the potential of the helicopter
as a more specialized anti-armor weapon, and as a result a new version of the 'Hind' was soon under development as the Mil Mi240, this being given the NATO reporting name 'Hind-D' when it began to appear in service in 1975. In this case it was not a 'strap-on' modification of the existing airframe, but a complete redesign of the forward fuselage to optimize it for an anti armor role. This change gave the variant what has become known as a 'typical gunship' layout The four-crew flight deck introduced
on 'Hind-B' disappeared in favor of a stepped tandem arrangement with the pilot in the elevated rear cockpit and the weapons operator forward under individual hinged canopies; the central and rear fuselage were unchanged. To give the MiI-24D protection from ground weapons, titanium was introduced
into the main rotor blades and the rotor head, providing the ability to withstand 20mm cannon shells; windscreens of bulletproof material were provided for each cockpit, and the quantity and quality of structural armor was increased, and among the more advanced electronics introduced in this model are under nose sensor packs (one for optronic weapon guidance), and the warning systems include RWR and 'Odd Rods' IFF. Armament for the new role includes a 12.7mm 105-in) JakB-127 four-barrel gun in an under nose turret plus weapons pylons on a stub wing similar that that of the 'Hind-A' but up-rated to a maximum load. The 'Hind-D' superseded the 'Hind-A' from about 1975, and more than 2,300 have been built. This total includes the Mi-24DU training model with no under nose gun, i\tIi-24W 'Hind-E' and MiI-24P 'Hind-F' (see separate entry), Mi-24RSh 'Hind-G1' radiation sampler, Mi24K 'Hind-G2' revised radiation sampler, and Mi-25, Mi-35 and Mi-35P export versions of the Mi-24D, M,-24W and Mi-24P
respectively.
Our model of the Mil Mi-24D features the sand brown and green camouflage scheme of the Soviets in the Cold War. The red star is painted on both side of the fuselage with black munitions hung ominously below the stub wing. Your model will be made exactly as shown in the photographs.
